Digital Solution to Track Vessel Emissions

Due to the regulations on carbon emissions becoming increasingly more stringent, a digital solution designed by Maersk Tankers has been devised to track vessel emissions. As of January 1st 2023, all ship owners are required to track and report their vessel emissions. 

Starting in January 2023, every ship owner will be given an annual energy efficiency rating – A, B, C, D or E – of their vessel. This will become more stringent year on year. This will bolster the ongoing effects already in place with the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) which aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions that are already on the water. The measure links the emissions to the amount of cargo a vessel carries over the distance travelled. 

Maria Damkær, Commercial Manager in the Go-To-Market function at Maersk Tankers had this to say: “Shipowners entrust us to manage their vessels and the way we operate them from port to port has a direct environmental impact.” She explains that the company is responding to demand from owners: “They need real-time data on emissions, and insight into how these develop, which we, in turn, are using to improve the operations of the vessels.”

This digital tracking solution has been developed together with shipowners in the company’s pools. Ship owners will be able to monitor their vessel rating and see how it changes each year. They will be able to see the reasons for any changes. The monitor will be able to give a three year projected rating, following the data it has collated. This valuable information will allow the ship owners to adapt the way in which they use their vessel to improve the rating. 

After intensive testing, the monitor can now be purchased and used on board. However, the product will be continued to be developed upon to improve the capabilities of this digital solution to track vessel emissions.
